PURE PUNK ROCK THERAPY –
Reviewed by Dave Ryan – 24th June 2005

I first saw Guns on the Roof over nine months ago and was amazed at how good they were for such a young band. Since then they have matured and progressed at an alarming rate and have turned into one of the best new punk bands in the U.K.
Still with an average age of only seventeen they have produced a CD which must be a contender for album of the year.

From the opening bars of Derailed, you are hooked, the guitar work of Danny Sharp is awesome, a massive wall of sound, crunching guitars, backed with the throbbing bass of Mark Miles. ‘What do you want,’ ‘Going all the way,’ ‘Hangman,’ ‘No regrets,’ superbly written songs with massive hooky choruses. The progression of this band can be seen in the re-recordings of ‘ Drugged up ’ and ‘ Sixteen ,’ far superior to the original recordings of the demized ep. ‘ Get out of my life ’ a contender for best track on the album grabs you by the throat, shakes you around and spits you out. There are so many catchy songs on this album, at least 5 to 6 worthy of single status. ‘ Michael Myers, ’ shows how good a singer Aaron Gunn (Harris) is. His vocals are fantastic, gritty but amazingly melodic. We see another side to his style in ‘ Goodbye,’ an acoustic song with haunting lyrics dedicated to his mum who brought him up single handed, but died suddenly when he was nine, ‘ Then you left me here alone, dazed and confused, and I didn’t know where to go – Now I’m going to say goodbye.’ Next track Alfie with its strong harmonies and superb hooks, it gets better and better, culminating with a fantastic cover of the Abrasive Wheels classic ‘ Vicious circle. ’ This is the fastest I’ve ever heard this song played and shows just why sixteen year old Joe Sefton is being talked about as one of the best drummers around.
Not only does this album have fantastic tunes and massive chantey choruses, it has some strong and personal lyrics. ‘ The icecaps are melting the ozone is thin, Lord what have we done’ (Hangman), ‘ My mates fucked up he’s all drugged up ’ (Drugged up), ‘ Wrecking homes and wrecking lives ’ (Demized), I feel that something aint right, tonight’s gonna be the night to start a fucking war ’ (Derailed), ‘ All this shit going on in my Head ’ (Get out of my life).

This album is the story of four working class kids from Leeds, all from broken homes, all full of anger and sadness. This is their therapy, this is – PURE PUNK ROCK THERAPY. 10 out of 10.

Guns On The Roof amble on to the stage, offer a quick hello, and an even quicker 1-2-3-4 and we are in to an early 80’s throwback punk set. No messing, even less time for posing. It is 150mph punk rock. The guitarist holds his guitar over the first couple of rows. Guns On The Roof keep the songs simple, yet explosive with the three R’s. Which are raw, ready, and raucous. The band has hints of Oi! And emo and with ‘Alfie’ they hate everything in their wake with a hook of “what’s it all about Alfie?”

The lead singer wants a circle in the middle, but the crowd don’t want to. So the band blast on, churning it out. By the end of the next song a few people are dancing in the middle and are having a laugh. The lead singer is baffled at the lack of a proper moshpit. One is soon sorted out. He soon sneaks out down the side of the stage and into the quite sizeable crowd, just for a second though as the songs are short bursts of energy.

Now the lead singer wants the mini pit to become a full one, explaining that they had one in Coventry the other day, so why not in Leeds? The F word gets a good airing in the set (don’t ask the vicar to a Guns On The Roof gig). Still the crowd love it. I can see why the Abrasive Wheels people are involved, the band are retro but so what. There is nothing complicated, and it is simple, straight forward punk rock with the odd tune thrown into the pot for good measure. My god there is even a lighter out for one of the songs (it’s not Mike And The Mechanics you know).
McDonalds gets a kicking and it is on with the music. The wittily entitled ‘Stupid Cunt’ follows (oh the joy) and is about the business manager. 200mph punk, broken guitar strings, no reverb in the microphone, but so what, the band play on against the odds. The lead guitarist is twirling round in circles, while the singer yells “what do you want?”

The finale is the fastest song yet; words and music a blur as the speed of the song reaches burnout and meltdown all in one go. With machine gun etiquette and burst ear drums, both are the order of the day.

Guns on the Roof - Junction 7 -
Nottingham 4th December 2004
By Billy Hunt - Label magazine

Saturday night and down to Junction 7, I'd been asked to go review new Leeds punk band ' Guns on the Roof '. Nothing else doing so I agread and went down town. As usual could n't find a parking spot and and my pal Jimmy couldnt find his wallet when he got to the bar. Got there late, but GOTR were just taking to the stage.

BANG - Were Guns on the Fucking Roof - 1 2 3 4 BANG, BANG, BANG. Fuck me I thought world war 3 had just started, the place erupted, the band charged around the tiny stage as though they were looking for the exit to get out of the place. From one side of the stage to the other, jumping, snarling, shouting. A blur of young, angry, spikey topped kids. When I say kids I mean kids, the first thing that hits you is how young this band are, the drummer looks about twelve, the rest of them can be no older then sixteen or seventeen. The energy they create is absolutely unbelievable, they roared through a set of tunes I'd never heard before, but found myself singing along to. ' Whats it all about Alfie, nothing, nothing ' and ' Get out of my life, get out of my life'. Song after song, fast melodic chanty punk, with choruses that embed themselves in your brain (all I could hear in bed that night was something about somebody being a stupid cunt, I cant even remember them singing this, but the tune just kept coming and coming, more than I did, as my other half wasn't, no, no thats another story). BANG, BANG, BANG, these guys were dripping with sweat. It a long time since I,ve seen a band put so much effort into a set. They finished the night off with an old song I haven't heard for a long time, a cover of Abrasive Wheels vicious circle. Fantastic.

This band are good, very young, but very tight and entertaining, a cross between old school punk and maybe some of the newer American punk bands. Highly recomended, go see them.

Get the beers in Jimmy, yeah, yeah, cant find your wallet.
